WANA (Jan 17) – On Friday, January 17, 2025, the Presidents of Iran and Russia signed a comprehensive strategic treaty in Moscow. The treaty, comprising 47 articles, encompasses all dimensions of bilateral cooperation and aims to expand and diversify relations in economic, security, cultural, and trade sectors.

 

Putin: The Strategic Treaty Will Transform Iran-Russia Economic Relations

Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a meeting with Iranian President Dr. Massoud Pezeshkian at the Kremlin, stated: “The signing of this document enables us to diversify bilateral relations in all dimensions and strengthen the economic cooperation between our two countries.” He also highlighted a 15% growth in trade exchanges between the two nations during the first ten months of 2024 as an indicator of progress in their relations.

 

Putin further pointed to joint projects in nuclear power plant development and transportation infrastructure, announcing a 21% increase in tourism exchanges between the two countries. He emphasized that humanitarian cooperation is an integral part of the treaty’s objectives.

Pezeshkian: Iran-Russia Relations Are Critical and Strategic

The Iranian President described Iran-Russia relations as vital and strategic, stating: “These relations are being expanded based on the recommendations of the Supreme Leader, reflecting his emphasis on regional management by regional countries.”

 

Pezeshkian announced the removal of obstacles to implementing the comprehensive treaty and added: “New agreements for constructing Iran’s nuclear power plant have entered the operational phase.” He also conveyed the Supreme Leader’s greetings to President Putin and stressed that the treaty could neutralize the plans of regional adversaries.

Official Program of the Iranian President’s Visit to Moscow

This meeting, the third between the Presidents of Iran and Russia under Iran’s 14th administration, was held with high-level delegations from both sides. Prior to meeting Vladimir Putin, Dr. Pezeshkian met with the Russian Prime Minister and began his official visit by laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Russia.

 

As part of the visit, the Iranian President is scheduled to meet Russian business leaders and industrialists and participate in an interview with Russia’s national television network, addressing questions about bilateral relations.

 

The President’s delegation includes the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Roads and Urban Development, Oil, Agriculture, and the Head of the Atomic Energy Organization, who have traveled to Moscow to finalize various agreements.
